Saskatchewan NDP promises to bring in one per cent wealth tax

SASKATOON — Saskatchewan NDP Leader Ryan Meili is promising to bring in a wealth tax if elected premier on Oct. 26.

It's the first official campaign promise from Meili, who made the pledge at a stop in Saskatoon.

He says a one per cent tax on people whose net worth exceeds $15 million would bring in $120 million to provincial coffers.

The party estimates that could apply to between 500 and 2,300 households in the province.

The NDP says it would not tax "everyday families."

It says the money raised from a wealth tax would go towards paying for health care and education.

"It's time for a tax plan that puts people first — not the Sask. Party's old boys' club," Meili said Wednesday.
