CCS facility captured nearly 65,000 tonnes of CO2 in September

During the month of September, the carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Power Station captured 64,855 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), according to information supplied by the Crown corporation.  

The average daily capture rate when CCS was online was 2,402 tonnes per day, with a peak one-day capture rate of 2,578 tonnes.

Over the previous 12 months, the CCS facility captured an average of 57,546 tonnes of CO2 per month.

The CCS facility was online 88 per cent of the month, coming offline for 86 hours due to issues with electrostatic precipitators at Unit 3.

During the previous 12 months, the CCS facility had been online an average of 77 per cent of the time.

Unit 3 at Boundary Dam produced an average of approximately 110 megawatts of power in September, compared to the 12-month average of 106.52 megawatts.

In the first nine months of 2020, the CCS facility captured 540,251 tonnes of CO2. Since the CCS facility came online in October 2014, it has captured 3,621,703 tonnes of CO2.

Preparations have begun for a scheduled October maintenance outage, during which time several components will undergo cleaning and maintenance.
